Calcium in Your Bones
Calcium is the most abundant mineral in the human body, and it is essential for the formation of teeth and bones, where 99% of the calcium in our bodies is stored.
Milk and milk products like cheese contain large amounts of calcium. They also contain other nutrients like proteins and lactose that aid calcium absorption. A lack of calcium in the diet can lead to bone changes and muscle cramps and spasms.
Recommended daily calcium intake:
- Children between 0 and 9 years of age: 500 to 800 mg of calcium a day
- Adolescent and adult males: 800 mg to 1,000 mg of calcium a day
- Adolescent and adult females: 800 mg to 1,000 mg of calcium a day
Pregnant women should add a further 600 mg of calcium to the usual recommended daily intake of 800 mg, taking their recommended intake up to 1,400 mg a day. Breastfeeding mothers should increase their intake by 700 mg a day.
If you drink half a litre of COVAP milk a day, you will be getting 600 mg of calcium. If you combine this with the calcium you get from other foods, like COVAP cheese, you will reach the recommended daily intake of calcium for an adult.
